Experience the spectacular Zani Pass Trek, a high-altitude mountain adventure connecting the Mulkho region with the remote Tirich Valley of northern Pakistan.
Standing at approximately 3,840 meters, Zani Pass is a scenic and historically important mountain crossing. The trek combines dramatic mountain landscapes, traditional villages and spectacular views of some of the region’s impressive peaks, making it an exciting experience for adventure travelers and trekking enthusiasts.
The Zani Pass Trek begins from Uthool, a mountain village in the Mulkho region. From here, the route climbs toward Zani Pass, gaining approximately 1,200 meters in elevation.
The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as you gradually gain altitude. From the pass, trekkers can enjoy panoramic scenery dominated by the impressive peaks of Istor-o-Nal and Saraghrar.
Looking east, Buni Zom rises dramatically above the Turikho and Mastuj rivers, creating an unforgettable mountain backdrop.
One of the major attractions of the Zani Pass route is its connection with the Tirich Valley.
For local communities, the pass provides an important and direct route between the surrounding valleys. Interestingly, the pass is known by different names among local communities: residents of Tirich Valley call it Zani An, while people from Uthool refer to it as Tirich An.
This difference in local naming reflects the historical and cultural importance of the pass to communities on both sides of the mountain.
The Zani Pass route is connected by a jeep road, making the approach relatively accessible before beginning the main trek. The broad approach allows trekkers to reach the trail from Uthool and continue toward the pass.
For groups traveling toward Tirich Mir Base Camp, crossing Zani Pass can provide an efficient route toward Tirich Valley while reducing the amount of time spent traveling by jeep.
Larger trekking groups can also transport supplies by road and coordinate with their support crew further inside Tirich Valley.
At approximately 2,640 meters, Uthool is an attractive mountain village and a suitable place for trekkers to spend a night before crossing the pass.
For larger groups, the open meadow near the local school can provide a potential camping area. Surrounded by walnut trees and located close to a freshwater spring, the setting offers beautiful views and a peaceful mountain atmosphere.
Although the Zani Pass crossing is relatively short and straightforward, its high altitude should not be underestimated.
Proper acclimatization is important before crossing the pass. Trekkers should allow their bodies time to adjust to increasing elevation and follow appropriate high-altitude trekking practices.
Precious Pakistan can help organize the route, transportation, local support and trekking arrangements according to the group’s requirements.
